Right to work checks

Posted on March 17th, 2022

The government has announced that the end date for the temporary COVID-19 adjusted right to work check process has been deferred to 30 September 2022 (previously it was 5 April 2022). The continued adjustments enable employers to:

  • Carry out right to work checks over video calls, rather than in person.
  • Allow job applicants and existing workers to send scanned copies or a photo of documents for checks, rather than provide originals.
  • Use the Home Office Employer Checking Service if a prospective or existing employee cannot provide any of the accepted documents.

The government has also advised that employers do not need to carry out retrospective checks on employees who had an adjusted check between 30 March 2020 and 30 September 2022 (inclusive).
