Acas advice – neurodiversity at work

Posted on February 17th, 2025

Acas has recently published new advice for employers on neurodiversity at work. This is to assist employers in creating an inclusive organisation and raise awareness in the workplace.

Neurodiversity describes the natural variation in human brain functioning. It refers to the fact that all human brains are wired differently in terms of information processing, communication and sensory processing. Examples of well-known types of neurodivergence include ADHD, autism and dyslexia. Being neurodivergent will often amount to a disability under the Equality Act 2010. The advice provides guidance and examples on:

  • Talking about neurodiversity.
  • Approaching the situation with sensitivity.
  • Using the appropriate language.
  • Ensuring employees have the appropriate support.
  • Considering reasonable adjustments during formal procedures such as conduct or capability.
  • Making an organisation more inclusive.

Schools may consider having a neurodiversity policy in place to help manage and support neurodivergent staff members.
